When my friend suggested we meet up for lunch at L’Ortolan, I thought, “Great! Any reason to try a new restaurant is a good one.” I Googled it and didn’t find much info, so figured Dakar Eats would be the first with the scoop.
My taxi driver said he knew where the restaurant was (of course), but it turns out he didn’t. Still, we found it without too much difficulty and the driver said, “Oh this place? It must be new.” Fair enough. The brightly colored paint certainly looked fresh and clean.

But when I walked in, L’Ortolan had the feel of an old favorite. Everything was certainly nice, clean and very attractive… but you got the feeling that this was a place people knew and loved. Turns out they’ve been open for five years! (By the way, when you Google it and spell it correctly, you get plenty of results…)
Here are a few key points to know:
– Three-course lunch menu for 6000cfa
– Senegalese lunch special for about 2500cfa
– Menu features a variety of French specialties and local favorites
– Good prices, great food!
– Apparently THE place to watch rugby matches
– Flag on tap. 🙂
I’m afraid I did a horrible job of taking photos or noting down menu details since I was too busy eating and chatting and enjoying the experience, so here are some menus from past events to give you an idea of what you can expect. You can also find Resto L’Ortolan on Facebook.

What’s flag-on-tap???? 🙂
I went a lot of time at L’Ortolan when I lived in Dakar!
Jojo is nice guy 🙂
sounds very good, might have to try and not 2 pricey
I have to say, I had a very disappointing meal there last night. The place was pretty dead — no ambiance. The food was at best okay. I think the Karmel Resto is a much better choice for cheap French food…
Kermel Restauarant was recently recommended to me as well! I love that there are so many places to try in Dakar. Thanks for the tip.
