Dakar Eats: map of places of interest

I’m working on a Google Map that will help us locate places of interest to those of us tracking down American groceries and goodies in Dakar.

It’s very much a work in progress, so let’s talk about a couple things… I’ve only placed pins on the map for places I’ve actually been myself and would recommend. But there are a lot more pins that should be on here! I’d like to ask two things of you.

1) Locations and a short description of places you think should be added. These can include grocery stores that carry products specifically of interest to Americans and restaurants that are just plain good.

2) Any corrections or updates to the map so we can keep it current.

You can leave this information in the comments below. Thanks!

  1. Oh, and I also need to know where Gusto’s goes on the map. I know it’s in Almadies off the road to the Meridien. I can’t find my landmarks on Google Maps though. Can anyone tell me how to find it so I can label it. Gusto’s definitely needs to be on here! 🙂

  2. I forgot to send you pics of my friend’s store… I’m sure her stock has all changed now. It’s called Dada Cosmetique Plus and she gets a few barrels from America every couple of months. Although its always a little different, she often has mac and cheese, ketchup, salad dressings, hot chocolate mix, cappacino mix, Maxwell House coffee, nuts (almonds, pecans), and Victoria Secret bath products and cosmetics. She is located in Ouakam behind the big white and purple building that says Senegal 2.0 on it. Its on the right soon after the Catholic Cemetery. Does that make sense?

  3. Oh, actually I think her neighborhood is considered Sacre Coeur, but we get off at the Ouakam/Mermoz exit. I think you could almost walk there from your apt Khady.

  4. Thanks so much, Kari! This looks great! Do you think you could list the establishments with numbers next to them, as it’s hard to know what all is on the map unless you click on each one. That’s a lot of work, so no big deal if you don’t have time. Just a thought. I am sort of pressed for time, so I didn’t get to click on each one, but I was wondering if you included the following:
    – Layal (Great Lebanese restaurant directly across the street from CDA and around the corner from La Gallette downtown. If those to aren’t on there, they’re pretty great places, too. CDA is a wholesaler for cheese and cured products including pork, and La Gallette is the best French bakery in Dakar, imho). What’s wonderful about Layal is that they deliver, so to anyone giving birth at Madelaine, it’s a great treat (especially when you’re sharing the amazing hospital food with your husband but one dish for two people isn’t enough!).
    – Ok, this may be a stretch, since I don’t know how many of your readers are as frugal as me, but I love the Saturday Market and any other place to get a good deal on American used clothes in excellent condition. If you were to be able to add where each of the other “Fëgg Jaays” are located and the days of the week, I think that would be a huge help to the tightwads who read your blog. I can tell you that the Monday Market (my personal favorite, as it’s not very crowded) is in the parking lot of that big stadium just off the freeway on the way to the airport. I forget the name, but any Senegalese person in Dakar can tell you that. The Tuesday market is along the aqueduct by Sam-Score (the big one). The Friday Market, I believe, is in Dalie Fort, and the Thursday Market, if I’m not mistaken, is in Guediewaye. Those probably won’t interest as many people as much, as they’re hard to get to, but you never know!
    – I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head, and this is getting long, but if I think of anything else, I’ll try to remember to send you those suggestions. Thanks for this!
